Assessment of filtered gas–solid momentum transfer models via a linear wave propagation speed test

The propagation speeds of linear waves in gas–solid suspensions depend strongly on the solids volume fraction and the wave frequency. The latter is due to gas–solid momentum transfer and allows a simple test on filtered gas–solid momentum transfer models. Such models may predict linear wave propagation speeds different from those obtained with the non-filtered model at wave frequencies higher than the filter frequency, but not at wave frequencies lower than the filter frequency.     

PHOTOCHEMICAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN NITROXIDE FREE RADICALS AND PHENOTHIAZINES IN SOLUTION

Abstract— Ultraviolet irradiation of photosensitive molecules like phenothiazine derivatives leads to the formation of short lived free radicals which are able to reduce stable nitroxide free radicals generally used as spin labels. The measurement of the electron spin resonance signal decay of nitroxides offers a tool for studying the photochemical reaction of phenothiazine derivatives in solution at room temperature, in a 10^-5 to 10^-2 M concentration range. Analysis of the reaction mechanism shows that the paramagnetic nitroxide is an efficient quencher of the phenothiazine triplet state; this reaction was used to demonstrate the influence of the solvent, quenching by oxygen and the role of the chemical structure of six phenothiazine derivatives on their photoreactivity in solution.     

On the relationship between differentiability and absolute continuity of measures on ℝn

Summary We give an elementary proof of the fact that a finite Borel measure on ⁿ is absolutely continuous with a C ¹ density if and only if it has directional derivatives which are continuous almost everywhere. The Radon-Nikodym derivative of a differentiable measure is given in terms of the directional derivatives.     

Two types of intramolecular addition of an Al-N multiple-bonded monomer LAlNAr' arising from the reaction of LAl with N3Ar' (L = HC[(CMe)(NAr)]2, Ar' = 2,6-Ar2C6H3, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3)

The reaction of beta-diketiminated aluminum(I) monomer LAl with a large bulky azide N3Ar' (L = HC(CMeNAr)2, Ar' = 2,6-Ar2C6H3, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) in the temperature range from -78 degrees C to room temperature affords two different isomers 2 and 3, which have been characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray structural analyses, as well as elemental analysis. The variable-temperature 1H NMR kinetic studies of this reaction indicate the existence of the monomer LAlNAr' (1) at low temperature and the thermal stability of the compounds increases in the order of 1 < 2 < 3.     

Synthesis,molecular structure,and absolute configuration of 1-α-pheitylethyl-3-(2-cyanoethyl)-4-piperidone

The Michael addition of acrylonitrile to the pyrrolidine enamine of 1-(S--phenyl-ethyl)-4-piperidone proceeds with the formation of. a 1:1 mixture of l-(S--phenyl ethyl)-3-(2-cyanoethyl)-4-piperidone diastereomers. A diastereomer isolated in pure form was shown by x-ray diffraction structural analysis to have S-configuration of the new chiral center at C₍₃₎ of the piperidone ring.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 12, pp, 1656–1662, December, 1985.     

Direct detection of oxygen intermediates in the non-heme Fe enzyme taurine/alpha-ketoglutarate dioxygenase

The reaction of substrate-bound taurine/alpha-ketoglutarate dioxygenase with O2 has been studied using cryogenic continuous-flow spectroscopy. Transient absorption spectra acquired at -38 degrees C show an exponential decay of a 318-nm chromophore with an apparent rate of 1.3 s-1. The observed optical changes and their kinetics are consistent with the profile of an Fe(IV) species detected recently by M?ssbauer spectroscopy (Price et al., Biochemistry 2003, 42, 7497-7508). Resonance Raman measurement upon excitation at 363.7 nm reveal at least two oxygen isotope-sensitive vibrations at 821/787 cm-1 and 583/555 cm-1 for 16O and 18O derivatives, respectively. An additional mode is likely to be obscured by an ethylene glycol vibration at 865 cm-1 and/or 1089 cm-1. The 821 cm-1 vibration is assigned to the stretching mode of Fe(IV)=O species on the basis of its frequency and isotopic shift amplitude. The 583 cm-1 band is likely to originate from an Fe-O2 precursor of the Fe(IV)=O species, although its structural details are unclear at present.     

Determination du plomb dans l'urine par spectrophotometrie d'absorption atomique

Lead is assayed in urine by atomic absorption spectrophotometry after separation by coprecipitation with a CaCO₃, HCl, (NH₄)₂HPO₄ solution at pH 9. Concentration of lead and removal of interfering substances are achieved simultaneously. Fresh or old urine samples acidified with HNO₃ and thymol can be used. Precipitation is quantitative. The precision of the method is ±0,004 ppm of lead.
